From the 1st of January 2022, the government are implementing the first stages for the updates to Import Controls. These updates will affect the processes/documentation required when importing goods. You can read more about this topic on our previous blogs, which give you more detailed information. With regards to this, from 01/01/22, Commodity Codes are also changing. Our customers need to be aware of these changes, to ensure all imports and exports are handled correctly.

What are Commodity Codes (Tariff Code, HS Code)?

For all UK Imports and Exports, Commodity Codes are clearance of goods for customs; enabling all parties to understand what duties/taxes/checks are applicable for each consignment.

These codes are set as 6 digits by World Customs Organisation and are reviewed every 5 years.

For UK Imports, a 10-digit code is required which can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/trade-tariff
