Role
Deep Sea Logistics Apprentice will develop skills in both operations and logistics management, providing support in the coordination of supply chain activities with financial transactions. This role combines the logistics of shipping, transportation, and warehousing. The apprentice will gain hands-on experience with inventory management, client communications, financial transactions, and operational efficiencies.
This apprenticeship is ideal for individuals interested in learning how the logistics industry works, import/export and supply chain management.
The Day-to-Day
- Order and Shipment Coordination: Assist in organizing the transportation and delivery of goods, ensuring that orders are processed and fulfilled accurately. Monitor shipments and provide updates to clients regarding delivery status.
- Client Communication: Liaise with clients, carriers, and suppliers to ensure smooth and timely delivery of products and services. Handle client inquiries regarding pricing, delivery times, and logistics options.
- Market Research: Research global supply chains, trade routes, and market trends that impact the pricing and availability of goods or services.
- Inventory Management: Track and manage stock levels for clients. Ensure timely replenishment of inventory based on client needs and market demands.
- Compliance and Documentation: Ensure compliance with all relevant trade laws, customs regulations, and financial reporting standards. Assist with the preparation and processing of shipping documents such as bills of lading, export declarations, and invoices.
- Financial Transactions: Work closely with the brokerage team to process financial transactions related to the buying and selling of goods, including invoicing, payment processing, and reconciling client accounts.
- Logistics Optimization: Assist in optimizing shipping routes and cost management to ensure the most efficient delivery of goods. Evaluate various transport methods (air, sea, land) based on cost, time, and reliability.
- Reporting and Data Analysis: Prepare reports on logistics performance, costs, and delivery timelines. Analyse data to identify areas for operational improvement.
- Risk Management: Identify potential risks in the supply chain (e.g., delays, trade restrictions) and propose solutions to minimize disruptions.
The Person
- Educational Requirements: Minimum of [Insert Educational Level] (e.g., GCSEs or A-Levels) in Mathematics, Economics, Business, or Logistics-related fields.
- Interest in Logistics and Supply Chain: Strong interest in logistics, transportation, and supply chain management.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to analyse supply chain data, shipping routes, and market trends.
- Attention to Detail: Strong focus on accuracy, especially in managing orders, financial transactions, and shipping documentation.
- Communication Skills: Effective verbal and written communication skills. Comfortable interacting with clients, suppliers, and logistics partners.
- Numeracy Skills: Proficiency with numbers and an understanding of pricing models, cost management, and inventory control.
- IT Skills: Competence in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and familiarity with logistics or supply chain management software.
- Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with logistics teams, brokers, and external partners.
- Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills, particularly when dealing with logistical challenges, delays, or compliance issues.

As part of this apprenticeship, you will receive training in the following areas:
- Logistics and Supply Chain Management: Comprehensive understanding of the logistics lifecycle, including transportation, warehousing, and inventory management.
- International Trade Regulations: Knowledge of trade compliance, customs regulations, and the financial reporting requirements associated with global trade.
- Financial Brokerage: Training on the financial aspects of brokerage, including transaction processing, invoicing, and payment systems.
- Client Relationship Management: Skills in managing relationships with clients, suppliers, and partners to ensure a seamless delivery process.
- Transport Optimization: Understanding of different transport methods and their cost implications, including how to optimize routes and delivery timelines.
- Risk Management: Techniques for identifying and mitigating risks in the supply chain and trade processes.
Career Progression:
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, there are opportunities to advance into roles such as Logistics Coordinator, Supply Chain Analyst, or Junior Broker in a logistics-focused brokerage firm. The experience and skills gained during the apprenticeship will also be applicable across the logistics, supply chain, and financial services sectors.
