Frequently asked questions

Here is some additional information you might like to be aware of before shipping goods to India.

How often do you provide consolidation services from India?

We provide direct consolidation services from India every week. Because we have fixed weekly sailings from Nhava Sheva to Felixstowe, you can expect your shipments to reach their destination at the earliest possible time.

What documents do I need to secure before importing from India?

With the cost of manufacturing being relatively lower in India than in countries closer to the UK, it is no surprise that there is a growing number of UK businesses purchasing goods from this growing economy. If you are interested in importing goods from India, you must prepare the following documents in order to avoid potential problems or delays to your shipments:

— Waybill
— Commercial Invoice – used by customs to declare imported goods. You should ensure that it indicates the name and contact details of both the seller and the receiver, the invoice number, the importer’s EORI and VAT registration numbers, a description of the goods, and the commodity codes, among other items.
— Original Self-Declaration Form (SDF)
— Shipper’s Letter of Instruction (SLI)

What would I need if I want to import restricted goods from India?

If you are considering importing restricted goods from India, such as antiques, plant products, precious metals or military equipment, you will need to secure a special import licence. Fortunately, Denholm Good Logistics employs highly experienced India freight forwarders who can handle this matter on your behalf. As we mentioned earlier, we also have a dedicated Trade Manager who can offer all the assistance you need when shipping to India.

Do I need to make import declarations when purchasing goods from India?

Like all products arriving from outside the UK, goods imported from India must be declared to the UK customs authorities. This is a standard operating procedure that you must complete to ensure the release of your goods.

Making import declarations can be quite complicated which is why most businesses use freight forwarders in India and the UK to handle the customs process on their behalf. If you need any assistance in this regard, please feel free to contact our staff as we will be more than happy to offer our expertise.

What is the best way to transport goods from India?

The answer to this question will often depend on your needs and preferences. Air freight is undoubtedly the fastest way to transport your goods (just ask any freight companies in India). On the other hand, if you are looking to minimise your expenses, sea freight is your best option as it is significantly cheaper than air freight. However, the downside is that lead times are much longer with sea freight and it could take weeks for your shipment to arrive at its destination.

If you can’t decide on which option to choose, our highly trained staff can provide some expert advice. Please get in touch with us so we can answer any questions you may have.
