The UK Government has officially recognised the regionalisation of Germany’s recent Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak, confirmed on 10 January 2025. This means that trade restrictions will now apply only to a designated containment zone in Germany, allowing exports from other regions to resume, provided all standard import conditions are met.
The UK’s latest safeguard declarations and import/export lists have been updated here to reflect these changes. Businesses can now trade animal products and live animals from regions outside the containment zone with confidence. The UK has designated these areas as FMD free for at least 24 months, ensuring that trade can proceed.
However, it is important to note that restrictions remain in place for other diseases, including Bluetongue and African Swine Fever. Businesses should continue to check the latest guidance to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations.
For businesses involved in importing bovine semen, ovine and caprine semen, ovine and caprine ova embryos, and bovine embryos, it is essential to include the correct ISO code in Box I.8 of the relevant health certificate. The first paragraph of the animal health attestations should also reflect that the products originate from animals outside of the restricted zone. This ensures full compliance with UK import regulations.
